Background on Our Giving Plan

When we first set out to give back through charitable donations, we had a couple specific subjects that have consistently been close to our thoughts when considering setting up such a plan. We even found a couple specific charities (one with an international mission and one meeting a local need) that targeted these issues, and thought we were done and ready to set up and announce our plan for making contributions. However, after continuing to educate ourselves about charities in general, and evaluating several reviews, we found so many charities have less than stellar ratings, with some having lower percentages of funds going to support the mission of the nonprofit than we would like to have seen (as compared to percentage of funds being used for administrative or other expenses).

After looking through the mission of various organizations, and checking out the reviews and ratings, we found one charity, which stood out, as one that not only covered the issues important to us, but so much more, and received the highest ratings available from the review groups.

Our Charitable Organization of Choice

The International Rescue Committee (or IRC) supports a staggering list of efforts, both internationally and domestically here in the United States.
The general description of this group's focus (as stated on their website):

"The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people survive, recover and rebuild their lives.
We restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home."

The specifics of what this group is involved in, is where we realized we'd found the right place to contribute. Please visit their website for more information - you may even find IRC program efforts right in your locale (scroll down to the footer on the IRC website to see a listing by location).

Efficiency of Donations to IRC
Not only does the IRC support a broad range of issues, but it does so with an impressive efficiency, so more of the donated amounts go directly to the programs themselves.

How We Give Back

Beginning in 2015, we here at Surf Munkey have committed to donating 1% of our annual gross sales (yes, gross sales, not net) to the International Rescue Committee, to be donated after the end of the year when we've pulled together our financials for the year. This means every purchase made from us, will in turn, provide some assistance to someone in need, through our donations to the IRC.

The logos of the IRC, Charity Watch, and Charity Navigator are the property of those respective organizations.
Ratings from the various review groups are as of December 2014 as posted on their sites.
